When we sense that we need to course-correct in some area of our lives and we choose not to, we often find ourselves dealing with life’s “2 x 4” version of change. We get fired from a job that we’d known for a while was no longer a match. We override our body’s intuition and eat something that results in us being up all night sick to our stomach. We avoid being honest with a friend and then find ourselves in a blown-up misunderstanding that takes weeks to repair.
Our capacity to surrender to the process of growth in our lives may be hindered by several factors. Fear of the unknown, trying to avoid hurting someone, and the illusion that we can control life – all can make course-correcting and healthy self-assertion a challenge.
If your inner guidance is pushing for change in some area of your life, as scary as it might be, remind yourself that change typically happens one way or another. Conscious course-correction and courageous self-assertion are much more empowering than trying to avoid or deny change.
Our true power lies not in trying to control change, but in how we choose to respond to the changes that show up in our lives. We can choose to cultivate unconditional trust in our inner guidance, and in our capacity to speak our inner truth with dignity and grace. We can choose to upgrade every fear into a conscious intention for our future. We can remember to ask for support. We can choose to be kind, gentle and supportive of ourselves as we move into the unknown territory of our new life.
The waves of change come – it’s an inherent part of our growth and evolution. When “surfs up,” we can trust our hearts, learn how to catch that wave and ride it, or be pummeled as we try to cling to the shore of familiarity and fear.
